WHAT IS AN E-BOOK?

An e-book (for electronic book: also eBook, ebook) is the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book. Text can be searched automatically, and cross-referenced using hyperlinks. This makes e-books an excellent choice of format for works that benefit from search and cross-reference capabilities, such as dictionaries, reference works, certain kinds of textbooks.

No physical space is required to store e-books. The file size can be very small. A complete works of Mark Twain occupy less than 10MB (or 0.2% of 4GB memory card). The Big English Encyclopedia with over 1.5 million article occupies 200MB (or 5% of 4GB memory card). Thousands of e-Books may be carried together on one device.

Readers who have difficulty reading conventional books can benefit from the adjustment of text size and font face. In addition, e-books may be read in low light or even total darkness (for example in bed without bothering asleep spouse). An ebook doesn't need to be held open like a paperback, so can be much more comfortable to hold.

MobileReference books are published in .prc format. You need to install the Free MobiPocket Reader to read e-books. The MobiPocket Reader was developed by MobiPocket, the Amazon.com company. Please do not confuse .prc books with .prc executable files on Palm OS - they have nothing in common except file extension.

With MobiPocket Reader you can read books on your PC, PDA or on your Smartphone.

Can I listen to an eBook?
Generally not. The eBooks are not MP3 audio files. The eBooks are text and images. Some eReaders can automatically read text but the quality is usually low.
