About MobileReference BooksAll eBooks are not created equal. The quality of an eBook varies greatly between publishers. This chapter explains the benefits of MobileReference electronic books. Table of Contents 1. Active Table of Contents 1. Benefits of an Active Table of ContentsHow do you find a poem you want to read among 2,000 other poems? Anyone reading an electronic edition of Emily Dickinson is confronted with this question. To facilitate the process, our editors included an Index of First Lines, sorted alphabetically. To search the MobileReference edition of Emily Dickinson poems for "I'm nobody, who are you? Are you nobody too? …", you click on the link Index of First Lines, click on the link -I-, then scroll and find "I'm nobody, who are you?". This method of indexing electronic books is called an Active Table of Contents. The illustration below shows the active table of contents from Emily Dickinson collected poems:
Looking for a poem or a story in a book that contains hundreds of stories is much easier with an active table of contents. Automatically scanned books often lack an active table of contents and links to footnotes. MobileReference editors carefully examine each book and insert links to individual stories, poems, letters, and footnotes to improve the reading experience and simplify electronic book navigation. The result is high quality books with active tables of contents. An active Table of Contents is essential for books that require quick navigation to chapters and verses. The King James Bible published by MobileReference has both book and chapter navigation links. In just a few clicks, you can be reading any verse in the Bible. The Table of Contents has quick links to both the Old and New Testaments, Deuterocanonical literature, the Suggested Reading Lists, Glossary, List of Illustrations, and the A-Z Index. Just select the book you want to read and go directly to it. Once you have opened the book, you can select the chapter you want in just one click. For example, if you want to select Matthew, chapter 7:12, you could go to the Table of Contents, click on the New Testament link, click on the book of Matthew, then click on the chapter 7 link at the top of the page and scroll to 7:12. 2. MobileReference Author-Collections (Mobi Collected Works series)MobileReference pioneered the publication of collections of works by a particular author in a single electronic book. This was motivated in part by the desire to reduce the clutter of titles in the digital library. Consider the collection 'Works of Charles Dickens' that contains more than 200 works. When purchased individually, every book has its own entry in your digital library. To select a book in a digital library of 200 books, one needs to scroll through as many as 20 pages of the library. MobileReference's 'Works of Charles Dickens' organizes all of these books into one electronic volume that has a single representation in the digital library.
Inside author-collections, MobileReference editors diligently indexed the books alphabetically, chronologically and by category. For example, a reader looking for 'A Christmas Carol' can click Fiction> 'A Christmas Carol'. Alternatively, a reader can click 'List of works in alphabetical order' > 'C' > 'Christmas Carol'. If a reader forgets the book title but remembers that 'A Christmas Carol' was written by Charles Dickens early in his career, he or she can click on the 'List of works in chronological order' > (1843) 'A Christmas Carol'.
MobileReference had developed over three hundred collections by William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, Charles Dickens, Leo Tolstoy, and other authors. All of the books were carefully checked for accuracy and completeness by a team of experts. Designed for optimal navigation on the Kindle, iPad, Nook, Sony Reader and other electronic devices, MobileReference author-collections cost $5.99 or less. To search for MobileReference ebooks: enter mobi (short for MobileReference) and a keyword; for example: mobi Dickens. 3. Travel Guides from MobileReference (Mobi Travel series)Electronic Travel Guides are notoriously harder to use than paper books. To enable a better experience, MobileReference designed Travel Guides specifically for electronic readers. The active Table of Contents divides articles into categories such as MAPS, ATTRACTIONS, TRANSPORTATION, etc. Local attractions are listed under the SEE link. Articles describing attractions normally indicate the address, telephone, hours of operation and admission charges on top of the page under the first illustration. The TOP 10 link features sights that no visitor should miss. Tips on what to do are listed under the DO link. Shopping suggestions are listed under the BUY link. The GET OUT article lists nearby towns, cities and other places worthy of a visit.
Itineraries include our suggestions for your travel route and include links to individual attraction articles. Click on the link to read detailed information about a sight.
Main attractions are numbered and plotted on a map. The numbered list of attractions under the map links to individual attraction articles. In addition, the map page displays the list of attractions in alphabetical order. This list includes both links to individual attraction articles and links to the map. The numbered list provides a better reference when you know your location and want to identify attractions nearby. The alphabetical list provides a better reference when you know the sight you want to see and want to locate the sight on the map.
